This morning we had Benjamin Atkinson from Fill Their Lunchbox come and visit us. He is the founding director of this amazing charity. He heard about the large number of children in Christchurch who were coming to school without lunch to eat. They wanted to help people help people, it is about the whole community to make change at an important level. People feel good about making a difference.
Tom's Shoes is an overseas example that is a buy one give one company.
At the moment FTLB are borrowing a kitchen from ChCh Men's Prison, Odyssey House. This is another way that this charity is giving back, the men learn how to cook while they are giving back to the community.
12 schools in ChCh are involved at the moment. These schools have a set number of children who get lunches. If people don't order enough lunches, FTLB covers this themselves. Children are excited to get their special lunches. Gareth Morgan was someone who advised Benjamin about how to make this work. One big thing, apart from improving behaviours in these kids, is the fact that truancy rates have dropped considerably. Benjamin earns less than the minimum wage for his amazing job. Their measure of success if not monetary but by the difference they make.
Benjamin believes that as a member of the community we have a responsibility to help others. Being empathetic is also of utmost importance.
Good Honest Products provide bread for 50% off. Akina is one of the mentors for FTLB. A great team around you is crucial to you being successful.
Some of the most difficult parts for the charity has been making such a cool idea come to reality. No road blocks should get in the way. Benjamin was really inexperienced initially, speaking in front of others is a big deal! Many people offer things and then they just don't come through with it. Keep fighting!!
Our students asked amazing questions, Benjamin's attitudes are so inspiring.
What might your legacy be?
